and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is one of the Germany's
most beautiful cities. Despite tipically Hanseatic
coolness and refinement, her infinite charm never fails
to win the heart of the visitor. Hamburg is the "gateway
to the world", all kinds of goods being transshipped in
her port, the largest one in Germany. The
state-of-the-art technology and great efficiency of one
of the world's most modern container terminals are
second to none.
Hamburg is a city with many faces. There is the modern
metropolis, with her ports, university, industry, space
and aviation technology [............] world-famous
musicals, theatres and museums. But there is also the
old Hamburg, a wealth of well-preserved buildings
recalling the golden age of the Hanseatic League and its
merchants.
GENERAL
INFORMATION
Let’s talk about our island in the present, in history
and in mythology. Mythology says that Salamina and the
nearby island Aegina were daughters of the river god
Assopos. The Sea God, Poseidon, fell in love with
Salamina and because of his tight hug Salamina got its
very strange shape. Their child was Kychreas. Kychreas
had a daughter named Glaffki (meaning the blue Eyed) who
married Telamon, son of the King of Aegina, Aeakos.
Telamon had two sons: Ajax and Teucros. The two brothers
participated in the Trojan War with 12 ships. Ajax was
described as one of the bravest Greeks. His end,
however, was tragic. He committed suicide upon his
defeat by Odysseus for the prize of Achille’s weapons
and armor in the funeral games organized to commemorate
Achille’s death. When the Trojan war ended, Teukros
returned to the island but his father, Telamon was very
angry with him because he didn’t take revenge for the
death of his brother. As a result, Teucros left the
island, went to Cyprus and founded a city that he named
‘’Salamina’’.
Salamina, lies in the Saronic gulf and it’s near Athens,
the capital of Greece. It’s an island that combines the
countryside and the seaside it’s a really traditional
island with unique traditions. People here, are
patriots, hospitable, religious! Each person can tell a
story about Salamina and their life. Be sure to ask!
We are proud of our churches too, because each one is
unique. This particular church is the first you see when
you come to Salamina by boat from Peiraius!
One of the most important buildings in Salamina is the
Euripideio Theatre. It is built on Eleftherotria Hill
overlooking the capital city of the island. Here many
theatrical and musical shows are held every summer!
In older times there were many windmills on the island
but now just a few of them remain – and not in a very
good condition we should say. This one is on a hill just
opposite our school.
What you can see in the pictures are our traditional
Salaminian costumes, which are unique because they are
so beautiful! You can find them in our Folk museum!
Now let’s talk about History. Salamina is known
worldwide because of the naval battle between the Greeks
and the Persians. This battle is significant for the
whole world, especially Europe! If the Persians had won
that battle things would be very different today.
During the Persian Wars, the people of Salamina helped
Athens against the invaders, especially during the epic
sea battle which took place in 480 B.C. The three great
tragedian of Greece ‘’met’’ during the battle. Aeschylus,
the eldest of the three, fought in it. Sophocles, then a
teenager, participated in the victory celebration.
Finally, perhaps the greatest tragic playwright of the
three, Euripides, was born on the island on the day of
the battle. Recent excavations, which began in 1994 by
the archaeologist Dr. Yannos Lolos, have brought
valuable findings to light. One example is the discovery
of the cave of Euripides where, according to historical
sources, he wrote his immortal works. On the footpath
leading to the cave, the ruins of the Temple of
Dionysous were discovered. Additionally, even more
recent excavations in the southern part of the island,
in the area now known as ‘’Kanakia’’ have revealed the
ruins of the Homeric-era settlement and Ajax’s palace.

ANCIENT
MAZARA
The
city is situated at the extreme southwestern tip of Sicily. Its shores
have been harbour and landing places since prehistoric times for different
civilizations. Under the Arabs, Mazara experienced a long period of
splendour which continued with the Normans. The Muslim armies landed in
Mazara on 16th June 827 A.D.; the islamic quarters still existing in the
town, the names of some places, of food, of people, are the only left
evidence of the Arabian domination. Under the Arabs, Mazara became a place
of great importance for the trading activities connected both to its
harbour and to agriculture, which, thanks to a skilful use and saving of
waters, flourished. Nothing is left of the Arab town. The only tangible
example of the islamic culture can be seen in the urban layout of some
ancient quarters in the heart of the town (photos
1 and 2).

The
Normans arrived in 1072 when King Roger defeated the Arabs; the big
monumental religious complexes, which underwent major and sumptuous
transformations under the Baroque period, are due to them. After the first
period of conquest, the Normans discovered the Arabian civilization and
were fascinated by it. A prosperous period began for Sicily: a long period
which saw a perfect fusion of three cultures: Greek, Arab and Latin. In
the field of architecture an example of the perfect mixture of the three
civilizations is San Nicolň Regale
(photo n. 3) which combines a
Byzantine layout with the use of small ashiars typical of the Arabs and
with the arches with multiple offsets typical of the Norman style.
Two
of the finest examples of the Baroque style are considered the Churches of
Santa Veneranda and of San Francesco d'Assisi (photo n. 4).
MODERN
MAZARA
Mazara
nowadays has the main fishing fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. The fishing
industry accounts for the main economy of the town. The second main
economic aspect is linked to agriculture with a production of thousands of
tons of grapes per year.
THE DANCING SATYR
The Dancing Satyr (photos no. 5 to 7) is a bronze statue found in the deep Mediterranean
Sea,
not far from the Sicilian coasts, in 1998. It is considered to
belong to the hellenistic period (it is dated back to III or II century B.C.) and can be compared, from a historical
and archeological point of view, to the "Bronzi di Riace".
Now it has been restored almost to its primary magnificence and can be
admired
in "The Satyr's Museum", in Mazara del Vallo.
The bronze statue conveys deep feelings and emotions because of the
perceived body movement for the frenzied, whirling Dionysian dance. Its magnificence and preciousness
can be fully understood only in the athmoshere and the silence of the
museum where it is kept.

TURKEY - Eskişehir
Eskişehir,
located on the junction point of the roads connecting
the civilizations, has been like an oasis in the middle
of Anatolian steppe throughout its history. The distinct
understanding of city planning we have been performing
for the last decade has enriched the value of Eskişehir
coming along the history.
Cities can change and transform only with the common
will and decision of the city people. Therefore, the
architect of the urbanism perception performed in Eskyşehir
is Eskyşehir people without a shadow of a doubt.
[............]
It is the pride of whole Eskişehir to be a model-city in
Turkey with its city planning concept just like many
other fields it pioneers in Turkey.
